Maharashtra :Agricultural Status to Livestock & Poultry Farming

Maharashtra:Agricultural Status to Livestock & Poultry Farming

In July 2025, Maharashtra became the first Indian state to grant agricultural status to livestock and poultry farming.

The move aims to bring livestock and poultry farmers within the ambit of core agricultural benefits and financial support systems.

Why Was Agricultural Status Needed?
Issue Explanation
Earlier Classification Livestock and poultry were treated as “allied activities” rather than core agriculture.
Exclusion from Benefits This classification excluded farmers from benefits such as subsidised electricity, tax exemptions, and formal credit access.
Livelihood Importance Livestock and poultry farming are vital sources of rural income and livelihood security.
Benefits After Agricultural Status
Benefit Impact
Lower Electricity Tariffs Poultry farmers will receive lower electricity tariffs, reducing operating costs of broiler units, hatcheries, and sheds.
Credit Access Farmers will gain access to Kisan Credit Cards and low-interest agricultural loans.
Subsidised Equipment Farmers can access subsidised solar equipment and other agriculture-linked support facilities.
