Periodic Labour Force Survey PLFS


  • India’s unemployment rate decreased from 5.6% in June 2025 to 5.2% in July 2025, showing an improving employment scenario.

About Periodic Labour Force Survey (PLFS)

  • Purpose:
    Estimates key labour market indicators such as:

    • Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR)

    • Worker Population Ratio (WPR)

    • Unemployment Rate (UR)

    Revamped Sample Design (From Jan 2025):

    • Introduced a monthly rotational panel scheme for rural and urban areas.

    • Each selected household is surveyed four times consecutively over four months to enhance data accuracy and timeliness.

  • Key Objectives of the Redesigned PLFS:

    • Generate monthly employment and unemployment indicators for rural and urban areas at the national level under the Current Weekly Status (CWS) framework.

    • Extend quarterly PLFS data to rural areas to provide comprehensive quarterly estimates of labour market indicators for all of India.

    • Provide annual estimates under both Usual Status (principal + subsidiary) and CWS for rural and urban regions.

  • Conducted by:
    The National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI).
