Urban Challenge Fund

The Urban Challenge Fund was approved on February 13, 2026 with an outlay of Rs. 1 lakh crore. It aims to support urban transformation through grants, reforms and investment-based models.

The fund responds to the rising importance of cities in India’s economy. Urban areas contribute a major share of GDP, but many cities face infrastructure gaps, climate risks, weak sanitation, mobility problems and governance limitations.

Financing model Encourages central and state funding, market borrowing and private participation.
Growth focus Major industrial cities are treated as strategic growth engines.
