On 27th February 2025, the UN Biodiversity Conference (COP16) in Rome concluded with a hard-won agreement on nature finance.

However, concerns remain over the feasibility of halting nature loss by 2030.

What is COP16?

Global Aim The framework aims to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030.

Agreements Reached at COP16
Agreement Details
New Biodiversity Fund Developing nations pushed for a new fund, arguing that the Global Environment Facility (GEF) is difficult to access. Countries agreed to discuss creating a new fund in 2028, but no immediate decision was made.
Roadmap for Nature Finance Countries reaffirmed their $200 billion annual biodiversity funding goal from COP15 in 2022, but have yet to meet their $20 billion commitment for 2025.
Finance-Environment Minister Dialogue A new international dialogue between finance and environment ministers was established to prevent biodiversity finance from being siloed within environmental ministries.
Monitoring Framework for COP17 Countries finalised indicators for tracking biodiversity progress, ensuring accountability at COP17.

Venue The 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity will be held in Yerevan, Armenia.
Dates Scheduled from October 19 to 30, 2026.
Theme The theme is “Taking action for nature”.
Main Focus It will focus on the first global review of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) implementation.
