Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)

The Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, recently extended his greetings to all personnel of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) on the occasion of its Raising Day.

About Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB)

The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), earlier known as the Special Service Bureau, was established on 15 March 1963 in the aftermath of the Sino–Indian Conflict of 1962.
It was created with the objective of strengthening India’s security preparedness along sensitive border regions.

SSB is one of the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) and functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).

Border Responsibility

The SSB is entrusted with guarding India’s international borders with:

  • Nepal

  • Bhutan

These borders are largely open and porous, requiring continuous vigilance and community engagement.

Roles and Functions of SSB

Border Security

  • Protects the safety and integrity of India’s designated borders with Nepal and Bhutan.

  • Prevents unlawful entry and exit across the Indian border.

Internal Security

  • Prevents smuggling, illegal immigration, and other transnational crimes.

  • Assists in maintaining law and order when required.

Community Engagement

  • Promotes a sense of security awareness among people living in border areas.

  • Strengthens cooperation between border populations and security forces.

Civic Action and Development

  • Implements social responsibility initiatives in border regions.

  • Undertakes development activities such as:

    • Construction of schools

    • Building roads

    • Setting up toilets and public infrastructure

  • These initiatives are aligned with Border Area Development Plans.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Performs duties assigned by the Central Government, including:

    • Election duties

    • Counter-insurgency and anti-uprising operations

    • Law and order duties

    • Participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions

Organisational Structure of SSB

  • Headed by a Director General, who is either an IPS officer or a senior CAPF officer.

  • Organised into infantry-style battalions.

  • Includes specialized units such as:

    • Engineering units

    • Signals units

    • Medical units

    • Dog squads

  • Has dedicated training centres for capacity building and skill enhancement.

Importance of SSB

The SSB plays a crucial role in:

  • Securing India’s open international borders

  • Preventing cross-border crimes

  • Strengthening internal security

  • Promoting development and trust in border communities
