Thirty-four students from Indian government schools have been selected to participate in the Sakura Science Programme 2025 and will visit Japan..
The Sakura Science Programme is a prestigious youth exchange initiative launched by Japan in 2014.
It is aimed at young students and researchers across Asia and other regions to stimulate interest in science and technology.
The programme promotes scientific curiosity, learning, and international collaboration among young people.
India joined this initiative in 2016, showing its commitment to global scientific cooperation.
It is run by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), which is Japan’s premier agency for science promotion.
The programme offers short-term visits to Japan where participants can:
Engage with cutting-edge scientific research and technology.
Learn from Japanese experts and institutions.
Immerse themselves in Japanese culture and society.
Besides India, the programme will include students from six other countries:
Egypt, Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and Zambia.
This highlights the programme’s global reach and Japan’s efforts to foster international scientific cooperation beyond Asia.
Develop Talented Human Resources:
The programme aims to nurture young people with potential to contribute to science and technology innovation in their home countries.
By providing exposure to advanced research environments, it helps shape future leaders in science.
Accelerate International Brain Circulation:
Encourages the exchange of ideas, talent, and knowledge between Japan and participating countries.
This “brain circulation” goes beyond brain drain by promoting collaboration and joint research.
Promote Continuous Collaboration:
Builds long-term partnerships between Japanese and foreign educational and research institutions.
Facilitates cooperative projects and exchange of best practices in science and technology.
Strengthen Diplomatic Relations:
Science diplomacy plays a role in enhancing friendly relations between Japan and other countries.
Through shared scientific goals, the programme helps improve mutual understanding and collaboration at the diplomatic level.
It encourages young students to develop skills in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
Provides an international platform for cultural exchange, broadening perspectives.
Helps countries like India build stronger scientific networks with Japan, leading to innovation and joint problem-solving on global challenges.
Promotes peace and cooperation through science.
